Pet Shop Catz

Hehehe... Me don't just post photos for only their cuteness...:P In fact these are what i took when i played with those kitties thru the window in front of a pet shop. in fact that afternoon I went for an interview in world trade center and when it's finished the day was still early and the weather was so nice, so i decided to walk to Lieu-Zhang-Li (六張犁) mrt that's how i ran into those pet shops. Before the kitty shop i stopped by one with puppy displayed. The puppies even only got 4 canine teeth and were so playful. I feel bad for them being split with their mommies in such young age. And for those kitties, the ones in the first 2 kitties actually were trying to grab each other's hands thru the cages. They're so adorable and dynamic to have fun with each other! This might sound very 機車 but i spent my lazy relaxing unemployed tuesday afternoon playing with puppies for like half an hour in front of pet shops in taipei city.:)

>>>>>> Yee? Are you what they call GOD?

>>>>>> Wooo... mom said I can't go out to play...

>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yeah... this is how life's meant to be...

Sick Nail

My nail is sick. The nail on my right hand middle finger is sick. It's got fungus infection from nowhere. For this tiny organ I went to see a dermatologist. He only spent 5 mins diagnosing and telling me the finding, while I spent 30 mins in his clinic for everything. At last I got a bottle of medicine, which looks like nail polish. Doc said the treatment will have to be taken for 1-2 months. This poor tiny nail might not be healed that soon. I also have to protect other nails from the chain infection.

Arrgghhh.... I really wanna ask... what have you done my right hand middle finger?

[LIVE!] CNY in Danshuei

This was the third day of chines new year holiday and the crowds in Danshuei MRT. The station had to control the flow by opening the escalator for going "in" the station and the stairway for "out" the station, and only allowing the "in"s until clearing out the platform. Now you see why the central taipei is so quiet and empty. Also when you can't find open stores in the city, you can always come here for whatever you want... food, drinks, groceries, entertainment, natural scenes, monuments... etc, if you don't mind crowds.

69 Coffee

There is this coffee shop in 2 buildings away from my apartment. It's just 3 months new, and is the only coffee shop with free internet service in this area. The first time I went there is for running away from the noise created by the neighbor downstairs who was refurbishing his entire apartment since 8.30am every morning. This coffee shop opens from 7.30am to 10pm mon to sun (incredibly long eh), offers various coffee, tea, waffles, cakes, and sandwiches only- no hot meals provided. It's not right facing the street, so there're not many people coming in, at least in the several afternoons i spent there, it's never full nor packed.

There're 4 client groups showing frequently or regularly in this shop: Grandmas & Aunties, the Comic Boy, real state Staffs & their Clients, and Me. If they have this frequent visitor card, Me will definitely get the least points among those 4.

The Grandmas & Aunties are from this neighborhood. Usually the grandma brought grandma's mom here, sometimes auntie would join in in a few mins, bringing along another grandma or another auntie, or sometimes grandma would come here along. They usually ordered coffee or drinks, seldom ordered food, and they speak in mainland chinese accent, and very often the japanese would pop up in between chinese conversations. Apparently they're kind of wealthy as they know how to enjoy life. Apparently they're not early immigrant grandmas & aunties, as they're not like my grandma who grew up poor and cares more on saving then spending. Apparently they're happier grandmas & aunties who don't only pay attention on aging health and grown up kids, but live out the life with personal relaxing afternoon teatime.

If you come during weekdays, you can hardly miss this comic boy (follow the red arrow). He's always there reading comic books quietly, never bothers to order any drinks or talk to anyone. There's always a glass of lemon ice tea on his table when he starts reading, and he never ordered the 2nd one. He usually came with his grandma, the same one above, but sometimes he came alone, or stayed there on his own after grandma left. He always has enough comic books to read no matter how long he sits there, and in any case he finished the books his grandma would always volunteer to give him money to rent more. He's now a symbol, or say, a logo of this coffee shop to me. I bet you would also feel weird or uncomfortable or something missing like me if he's not there in this shop.

The third group is real state people but since they're always loud and coming in group and all in lousy suits i don't really like them so i'll skip the introduction and photo and if you want to know how they look like you go see yourself.

As for Me, i found i've fallen for this coffee shop and the people in there including the waitresses. Everytime i go, i see same and familiar faces which makes me feel secure and homey. I feel i'm part of the family of those people even tho i don't know any of them. i feel i'm in part of those people's life and maybe they think the same way to me. Maybe they're also curious about me who always brought a laptop there and sunk in the internet world, on her own. Maybe we all are just longly and free individuals and come here for some company and social acceptancy. Or, maybe we just love it's coffee and fruit waffle.

26 23 23 25 97

Reading Skills Level Your Performance
Reading High(22-30)

Test takers who receive a score at the HIGH level, as you did, typically understand academic texts in English that require a wide range of reading abilities regardless of the difficulty of the texts.

Test takers who score at the HIGH level, typically

  • have a very good command of academic vocabulary and grammatical structure;
  • can understand and connect information, make appropriate inferences, and synthesize ideas, even when the text is conceptually dense and the language is complex;
  • can recognize the expository organization of a text and the role that specific information serves within the larger text, even when the text is conceptually dense; and
  • can abstract major ideas from a text, even when the text is conceptually dense and contains complex language.
Listening Skills Level Your Performance
Listening High(22-30)

Test takers who receive a score at the HIGH level, as you did, typically understand conversations and lectures in English that present a wide range of listening demands. These demands can include difficult vocabulary (uncommon terms, or colloquial or figurative language), complex grammatical structures, abstract or complex ideas, and/or making sense of unexpected or seemingly contradictory information.

When listening to lectures and conversations like these, test takers at the HIGH level typically can

  • understand main ideas and important details, whether they are stated or implied;
  • distinguish more important ideas from less important ones;
  • understand how information is being used (for example, to provide evidence for a claim or describe a step in a complex process);
  • recognize how pieces of information are connected (for example, in a cause-and-effect relationship);
  • understand many different ways that speakers use language for purposes other than to give information (for example, to emphasize a point, express agreement or disagreement, or convey intentions indirectly); and
  • synthesize information, even when it is not presented in sequence, and make correct inferences on the basis of that information.
Speaking Skills Level Your Performance
Speaking about familiar topics Fair(2.5 - 3.0)

Your responses indicate you are able to speak in English about your personal experiences and opinions in a mostly clear and coherent manner. Your speech is mostly clear with only occasional errors. Grammar and vocabulary are somewhat limited and include some errors. At times, the limitations prevent you from elaborating fully on your ideas, but they do not seriously interfere with overall communication.

Speaking about campus situations Fair(2.5 - 3.0)

Your responses demonstrate an ability to speak in English about reading material and experiences typically encountered by university students. You are able to convey relevant information about conversations, newspaper articles, and campus bulletins; however, some details are missing or inaccurate. Limitations of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation at times cause difficulty for the listener. However, they do not seriously interfere with overall communication.

Speaking about academic course content Fair(2.5 - 3.0)

Your responses demonstrate that you are able to speak in English about academic reading and lecture material, with only minor communication problems. For the most part, your speech is clear and easy to understand. However, some problems with pronunciation and intonation may occasionally cause difficulty for the listener. Your use of grammar and vocabulary is adequate to talk about the topics, but some ideas are not fully developed or are inaccurate.

Writing Skills Level Your Performance
Writing based on reading and listening Good(4.0 - 5.0)

You responded well to the task, relating the lecture to the reading. Weaknesses, if you have any, might have to do with

  • slight imprecision in your summary of some of the main points and/or
  • use of English that is occasionally ungrammatical or unclear.
Writing based on knowledge and experience Good(4.0 - 5.0)

You responded with a well-organized and developed essay. Weaknesses, if you have any, might have to do with

  • use of English that is occasionally ungrammatical, unclear, or unidiomatic and/or
  • elaboration of ideas or connection of ideas that could have been stronger.

According to the interpret chart, iBT 97 is in paper test around 595, which exceeds the min requirement of english ability for graduate schools application. This is not a high score tho, but for someone who spent only one-week preparation like me, it's already a surprise. Also i want you to look at those funny parts i marked in red- grammar error, ungrammatical english,limitation of grammar... i couldn't help but laugh and wonder, is my grammar really that bad? Hahahaha..... why was i so proud of my grammar?:P

And this one is my favorite: Your use of grammar and vocabulary is adequate to talk about the topics, but some ideas are not fully developed or are inaccurate. Does that mean i didn't know what i was talking about? It reminded me the model answer in iBT introduction tour... "the horses are programmed..." Haha... i can imagine the faces of scoring people who had to listen to hundreds of test takers' nonsense talks and tried not to burst out tears or laughs or swears or...

Anyway, this is a good start neh!;)

Junk Business

The internet connection in my place is getting worse... usually it got disconnected every 20 mins to 1hr, this month no connection for the whole day seemed to be normal, until i turned off the power on wireless box and restarted again. I, therefore, have been having trouble updating this blog frequently.

So these weeks before chinese new year are cleaning weeks, that people are allowed to throw away huge trash like furnitures or household appliances at some street corners for recycle collection. For our apartment complex the collecting schedules are tonight and tomorrow night. Since i'm moving out soon i've got some big stuff to be thrown away and so i got home early for this matter.

When i got home around 9pm, i saw a lot of people gathering in our alley working on some furnitures aside the car lane. I didn't know what they were doing until i saw their recycle trolley. I was very surprised that people didn't follow the official time (10pm to 6am) to take out the trash, also that those recycle people have been waiting there snatching those "valuable junks" at this freezing cold night!

I've never seen things like this before. At my grandma's place where we grew up from, there's only one recycle "beibei" ("uncle" in chinese) and for whatever recyclable stuff we intended to throw away, my grandma would ask us to leave to that beibei. I know there're some other guys or ladies in that area but seems everyone has his/her territory. Also those recycle beibei or ladies normally are old like over 60's, and don't have skills so have to collect junks then sell for living. However, what i saw tonight was like 7-8 of middle aged guys or ladies, looking for the most valuable parts of junks (they don't take the whole thing but only "valuable parts"!), rushing to grab those from people's hands and put into their trolley, then starring at the next potential "customers". They reminded me the last scene of the movie "perfume".

Before this kind of work was normally done by the poor, retired people, old veterans... those from bottom social class, now it seems a lot of younger stronger smarter people joining in to divvy the resource. They look more aggressive, snobbish, materialistic, and less friendly, which makes me uncomfortable and unwilling to give them any "business". In front of them i'm no longer a person with mercy, instead, i'm like a yummy lamb to them.

Tonight when i took the box of junks downstairs, one guy came up to ask me what's inside the box. I only gave him a cold answer:"why don't you check out yourself?", then put the box on the ground and left. I tried not to look back and care what's gonna happen behind me.
